Mentors Support Families During SNAP Benefit Delays

During the recent federal government shutdown, families across Indianapolis felt the strain of paused SNAP benefits. For the youth and caregivers we serve, these interruptions were a crisis, not just an inconvenience. When food assistance stopped, the families we serve that already carefully stretch every dollar were unsure how they would provide their next meal.

As soon as our mentors learned that several families’ SNAP benefits were placed on hold, they didn’t wait for someone else to fix it. Multiple mentors reached out to our team, asking how they could help. They assembled grocery boxes, delivered bags of fresh food, snacks, and drove across town to deliver. A few mentors even coordinated with one another to make sure no household was overlooked.

This outpouring of care reflects the heart of Urban Hope Indy. Mentorship here means more than monthly meetings; it means being a steady, compassionate presence in the lives of youth who deserve stability, safety, and support. Thanks to our mentors stepping forward, every affected family received food assistance during the shutdown. Parents expressed immense relief. And many of our youth witnessed, firsthand, what healthy community looks like when people take care of one another. Our families were even able to receive donated turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving.  To every mentor who delivered groceries, checked in on families, or simply asked, “How can I help?” Thank you. Your commitment continues to inspire and strengthen our community. Urban Hope Indy is proud to serve with you, and we are proud of the way you continue to embody the belief that care is action
